Dyslexia is a language-based learning difficulty. The difference in Chinese and English dyslexia is due mainly to the nature and structure of the language; the English language adopts an atonal, alphabetic system while the Chinese language adopts a total of four tones, logographic system.


Chinese and English Dyslexia Reading Programme


Teaching dyslexic students in Chinese, the programme aims to target their weaknesses through direct and explicit teaching of phonology, syntactic and semantic components of the language. The Chinese programme also focuses on the word recognition, common vocabulary, and sentences structure to increase efficiency in learning and interest in the Chinese language.

Students are taught interactively with the use of stories, educational games, and hands-on activities to make language learning a fun and memorable experience for them.

English language Dyslexia is also known as a reading disorder. It is characterized by trouble with reading or spelling despite having normal intelligence. Different people are affected to varying degrees. Difficulties may include spelling words, reading quickly, writing words, pronouncing words when reading aloud and understanding what one reads.

Orton–Gillingham (OG) method is used in our programme. OG is a highly structured approach, teaching the way of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time. It also pioneered the “multisensory” approach to teaching reading, which is considered highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia. Thus, the focus of OG is teaching kids to read at the word level.

OG also puts a strong emphasis on understanding the “how” and “why” behind reading. Students may explore why the letter s sounds one way in the word plays and another way in the word snake. Once they know consistent rules and patterns, they’re better able to decode words on their own.
